Dear 2L Parents and Students,
As you may know, Monday, March 30th is cultural dress day. This is a school spirit day where the students have the option of dressing up in their cultural attire from the country that they are from or grew up in. In our class the students have learned to appreciate and accept diversity more now that we have been discussing communities. I would like to use this cultural dress day as another opportunity for the students to learn about their own (and others) culture and community.
To do so I am going to require that the students bring one object from home that represents their own culture to present to the class (like show and tell). Some suggestions may be: a traditional piece of art or writing, chopsticks, a flag, a national pin or coat of arms, or maybe some sort of souvenir that someone would bring home from their country of origin. Each student must be able to explain what it is and how it symbolizes their culture. You may want to help your son or daughter by writing this out at home.
Another way that we are going to celebrate cultural diversity is by sharing traditional food with the class. I would suggest (but it is not required) that that the students also bring a small cultural snack to share with their classmates on Monday the 30th. Some suggestions may be: seaweed crackers, pork dumplings, sushi rolls, Rice Krispy cake, farmer sausage, dragon fruit, etc. We are not sharing a meal. Do not send a lot, just a little taste! Please provide enough for 20 people. Please also be aware of classroom allergies. Do not send anything that contains: peanuts, milk and seafood.
